I recently spent time visiting my friends at Anastasis Academy. This is a small, private school started by my friend Kelly Tenkely Several years ago she wanted to put into practice many of the ideal conditions that all learners need and deserve. During my day there talking to students and the staff there were several practices and beliefs around learning that any school, no matter the internal or external pressures could model and fundamentally change the learning environment for all kids.

Raul Santiago and Jon at San Gabriel School. Prior to kicking off the inaugural FlipCon Spain 2016 this past week, I had the chance to visit the first flipped school in Spain. San Gabriel is a K-12 school which up until two years ago was on the decline. The school is located 30 minutes north of Zaragoza, Spain and is housed in an old Catholic Seminary.

I woke up early thinking about a recent conversation. I'm struggling with how I may have handled my part of a conversation and am going back and forth (in my own mind) about a particular statement. "Lisa, you're just too warm. Can you pull that back sometimes so people don't see that as much?" Too warm? Pull that back? "You mean don't be myself? If you're asking me to stop being myself, I can't do that.

Many educators want to show that they are well read and that they are looking around the world for inspiration and ideas from some of the leading thinkers in the world. This helps to shape a vision for a more “globally inspired school” than if we are to only look at what we are doing in our own context. That being said, the notion of “you can’t be a prophet in your own land”, to me, is one that wreaks of insecurity.
