Visibility and reach: Journal articles v. blog posts

Dangerously Irrelevant

Back in 2008 I raised the questions : Why would anyone who wishes to actually reach educators and hopefully influence change in schools not be blogging? Also… why haven’t more faculty caught on to this? Eight years later, I thought that I would share a couple of recent tables that I made in order to illustrate this point further. The first table is the number of academic citations that I have received on the top 20 things that I have written or created ( according to Google Scholar ).

Why Growth Mindset Isn’t Working in Schools…Yet

Edsurge

The incredible research by Carol Dweck and her colleagues on the power of mindset in learning has become pervasive in education. The concept of growth mindset shows that contrary to popular belief, people aren’t born smart. Instead, we become smart as a result of hard work, productive effort, and feedback. The idea is quickly gaining traction. In a recent national survey , 97 percent of teachers agreed that all students can and should have a growth mindset, and that same number said fostering a

Underselling Open: The Problem with Cost Framing

Iterating Toward Openness

There seems to be an emerging concern among those who work in open education that we need to be careful not to “oversell” open. I understand the sentiment and appreciate the concern. However, I think the field is in far more danger from its systematic “underselling” of open. This has been worrying me for quite a while now, and I’ve been as guilty of it as anyone else.
