What was most exciting was that I got to join the Ed Elements team at our partner Horry County Schools (HCS), South Carolina’s third largest district. HCS has 54 schools, 2,700 teachers and more than 40,000 K-12 students.

When something is hard to believe or comprehend usually it needs to be demonstrated. For example, when a new technology is introduced on the market it is usually presented to the public through a demonstration of its functions and usability. Sometimes, to truly understand the logic behind a phenomenon or a concept, people need to see not just the result; they have to understand the functions and process that caused the observable result.

Nearly every state in the United States is reporting a teacher shortage. Various states have taken action to address this shortfall by changing teacher requirements. Utah has loosened teacher qualifications to include candidates with no formal teacher training; Hawaii just called for 1,600 teachers to live and work on the island ; and last year, Clark County in Las Vegas, the fifth largest district in the nation, launched a "Call for Heroes" as they scrambled to fill positions.

Choice can be a powerful thing —provided you can evaluate, and act on, the options available to you. For decades, Chicago parents have been able to apply to send their kids to their school of choice—and they can put as many as 20 schools on their wish list. Unfortunately, only about 25 percent of Chicago parents wind up sending their children to better schools than their neighborhood option.

Venture capital for U.S. education technology startups ebbed in 2016, dipping roughly 30 percent in deal volume and value from the previous year. Also missing were blockbuster exits, such as LinkedIn’s $1.5 billion purchase of Lynda.com and Instructure’s initial public offering, both of which took place in 2015. These statistics offer a somber reminder that the edtech industry does not produce quick, home run hits.

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

A good number of us here at ProfHacker prefer to avoid paper whenever possible. When I teach my writing course each fall, I have my students use Google Documents so that it’s easy to see an essay’s development over time. For classes where it’s not essential that I see a student’s revisions, I prefer that essays be submitted in PDF format, so that I can comment on essays using my iPad.

Saya was first introduced to Japanese students in 2014 and has since been programmed with facial expressions, responses and minor movements. Though social robots, like Saya, have been greeted with enthusiasm by students, researchers are taking a more critical stance regarding the ethics of introducing them as teachers.

Too often, when students produce school work, they turn it into a teacher for a grade and move on. And after the teacher spends time evaluating the student’s work, many students never look at the feedback, a cycle that frustrates both parties and isn’t the most effective way to learn. Several schools are trying a different model — one that takes more time but also helps students feel more ownership over the quality of their work.

I get annoyed when I see articles or hear people referring to it as a recent trend or a hot topic because it has actually been around since 1957.
