ETA hand2mind Unveils Daily Math Fluency at 2018 NCSM/NCTM Conferences

WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 25, 2018 – This week at the 2018 National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Conferences, ETA hand2mind unveiled Daily Math Fluency, a ready-made solution for developing efficiency, flexibility and accuracy in the grasp of basic math facts for students in grades K-5. Developed by elementary math expert Brittany Goerig, Daily Math Fluency activities are designed using visual models and manipulatives to support classroom math curriculum without cutting into instructional time.

Math fact fluency refers to the ability to recall the basic facts in all four mathematic operations accurately, quickly and effortlessly. When students achieve math fluency, they attain a level of mastery and can retrieve basic math facts from long-term memory without conscious effort.

A teaching and learning consultant for elementary math with 22 years of experience in education, Goerig has first-hand experience using these strategies to help students succeed. She spent 17 years in the classroom as an elementary math teacher. Today, in her role as a math consultant for Region 10 Education Service Center in Richardson, Texas, she creates and conducts professional development for teachers

“When students construct their own mathematical knowledge based on understanding the relationships in math, they are on the path to becoming mathematical thinkers,” said Goerig. “Daily Math Fluency provides teachers with engaging hands-on activities that will help their students apply strategies accurately, efficiently and flexibly, growing fluency.”

All Daily Math Fluency kits include 180 days of daily activities that build number sense with Number Strings and Math Talks in less than 10 minutes:

§ 60 Math Talks help students develop and discuss various strategies to solve one problem, promoting active participation to assess student thinking.

§ 120 Number Strings present a series of related problems focused on a strategy, a big idea in mathematics, and/or a model to teach appropriate strategies through repeated practice.

§ Hands-on manipulatives such as number paths, Rekenreks, open number lines and arrays develop efficiency and accuracy.

“It was important for us to create a better solution that addresses the challenges teachers face in the classroom in developing their students’ fluency in math. Brittany brings her years of success in the classroom and coaching other teachers to the development of Daily Math Fluency,” said Bill Chiasson, president, ETA hand2mind. “The activities in our hands-on solution are teacher and classroom-tested and will help teachers guide their students as they develop and master math skills throughout the school year.”

Goerig is presenting sessions that highlight the strategies in Daily Math Fluency at both NCSM and NCTM this week:

§ Improve Fluency with Math Talks and Number Strings, NCSM, Monday, April 23, 9:30 am

§ Building Fluency Through Problem Strings and Math Talks, NCTM, Thursday, April 26, 11 am, Convention Center Room 204C

Educators from around the country can engage with Goerig in a Facebook Live session on Thursday, April 26 at 2 pm at http://bit.ly/2Hq3WVv.

Available in June 2018, Daily Math Fluency Kits are $199.95 per grade level and Daily Math Fluency Center Kits are $124.95 per grade level.
