The Learning Revolution
Weekly Update

August 5th, 2014

One of the reasons people stop learning is that they become less and less willing to risk failure.
- John W. Gardner

The Learning Revolution Project highlights our own "conference 2.0" virtual and physical events and those of our over 200 partners in the learning professions. We also highlight good conversations about learning taking place between educators, learners, leaders, and others from the school, library, museum, work, adult, online, non-traditional and home learning worlds. The Internet is shifting the boundaries of these worlds, and we believe that as they increasingly overlap and integrate these conversations will be critical to framing and preparing for the learning revolution starting to take place.

CountryDaySchool

Country Day World School is committed to preparing young people for a lifetime of discovery and learning. The World School program, with best in class curriculum, is a unique program for a limited number of qualified students. It is designed to socially and intellectually prepare students for high school and college. A rigorous educational program promotes academic excellence and teaches students to think and learn both independently and cooperatively. The curriculum is demanding, but flexible enough to accommodate individual learning styles and interests. Teachers in our learning community are innovative and creative, inside and outside the classroom, and students are encouraged to strive to reach their full potential in all that they do. Offering a small liberal-arts college atmosphere, students are respected as important participants by the faculty as they research issues, debate ideas, and present their work. • Tuesday, August 5th at 7pm & Wednesday, August 6th at 8pm Alt Ed Film Fest Live Director Interviews with German Doin and Cevin Soling, Many of us take our education for granted. But what did we really learn in school, and who decided what was important for us to know? Was there a gap between what we learned in the classroom from our teachers, from our peers, and what we needed to know throughout the rest of our lives? What does the type of education we receive say about the world it prepares us to enter? These and many other questions are addressed in the seven documentaries chosen for this year's Alternative Education Film Festival. From homeschooling to unschooling, from Buenos Aires the Himalayas, and from America's common core to the self-directed 'curricula' of many home learners, we hope these films stimulate and inspire you to think about education's role in creating your life and the world. • Why eBooks?. Julie Long's recent article in the SecurEdge Networks Blog lists several reasons that eBooks are good solutions for classroom content. From limiting our environmental footprint to teaching students advanced search skills to better navigate bulky text books, and from enriching text with multimedia content to freeing up physical spaces in our classrooms and libraries, eBooks certainly have a lot to offer. But what about the tactile reading experience of paper books, or the quickly scribbled notes in the margins that are inspired by our reading? Depending on your reading device, this all seems to be possible with eBooks. What do you think? How have your reading habits changed? Read more about eBooks here.
  • A Young Learner, on Learning. Kathryn P. Haydon, founder of Ignite Creative Learning Studio, writes the widely popular Open Letter to Adults from a Highly Creative Child on the Creativity Post. Haydon writes a letter from the perspective of a young creative learner to his teachers, responding to common criticisms of student behaviors. Often you say other things about me, like I’m a dreamer and I have a hard time paying attention, or that I need to apply myself. When you say these things, I’m not sure what you mean because I see myself differently. Read this letter -- can the students in your life relate to these mixed messages? Do you remember what it was like to deal with competing messages from adults in your life?
  • Planning Your #BestYearEver. Todd Finley writes 9 Ways to Plan Transformational Lessons: Planning the Best Curriculum Unit Ever, a great article for those of you who are kicking into high gear with planning for the upcoming school year. Citing educational research in student choice and creative instruction, Finley outlines some great curriculum design strategies. Behind the scenes, transformational teachers conscientiously labor over curriculum plans that look simple and even elegant to classroom observers. Find out how they do it here.

Global Education Conference

  • How You Can Get Involved with the Global Education Community. Lucy Gray, global education superwoman and organizer of the fifth annual GlobalEdCon, has shared a great post about how YOU can get involved with the global education community. Social media connections, open discussion forums, presentation opportunities, volunteer networking, and ongoing conversations about connecting with global educators -- these are just a few of the benefits of joining and contributing to the Global Education Community. Find your global education niche here.

See you online!
