CoSN 2019 kicks off in Portland, OR this week, and it brings with it rich content spanning a variety of K-12 edtech trends.
eSchool News will be there, and while we’re there, we’re looking forward to taking a deeper dive into some of the biggest K-12 edtech trends and challenges facing school IT leaders and administrators.

1. Equity: During CoSN 2019, a panel on student voices and expectations will feature real students who will discuss how their education has been impacted by access–or the lack of access–to impactful and effective uses of technology. Another session will break down the key ingredients needed to cultivate digital equity, including how districts can inspire and support digital equity in their schools.

2. Coding and Computer Science: Research is firm on the benefits computer science has for students. Even if students don’t pursue careers in coding or STEM, the skills they learn from computer science, such as computational thinking and problem solving, will help them achieve success in other academic and professional pursuits. CoSN will highlight how one Massachusetts district continues to ensure students in all grades have the chance to learn computer science concepts and applications. The president of Code.org will also be on hand to explain why educators should teach computer science and discuss how districts across the nation are working to implement coding programs.
3. AI in Education: Chief among K-12 edtech trends is the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) has overwhelming potential in education. One of the biggest challenges? How to find practical uses for it. CoSN will explore the role of AI in education, how AI’s evolving role in society is shaping education, and how schools can leverage (and in some cases, already are leveraging) these advances for their benefit. Another session will feature ISTE’s research on AI in education and how educators and students are exploring the technology.
4. Future Skills: Future readiness is a big deal, especially because today’s students face jobs that don’t exist today. Teachers have to prepare students for a workforce and an economy that is vastly different from years past. CoSN will explore how redefining readiness can position students for success after graduation.
