Florida’s Commissioner of Education Approves the Award-Winning Discovery Education Science Techbook for Classroom Use Statewide

-Florida One of 12 States to Approve the Science Techbook Through Its State Adoption Process-

Silver Spring, Md. (October 10, 2018) – Following a comprehensive review, Florida’s Commissioner of Education, as recommended by the state’s Instructional Materials Reviewers, recently approved the adoption of the award-winning Discovery Education Science Techbook for statewide use as a core instructional resource through its state adoption process. Discovery Education’s Techbooks are currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across the United States and Canada. To date, 12 states have approved the Discovery Education Science Techbook for classroom use through their formal adoption process.

With the Florida Commissioner of Education’s approval of Science Techbook series of K-12 courses, school districts statewide are now able to purchase and integrate Science Techbook into science instruction for each grade level Kindergarten through 5th grade, Life Science, Earth & Space Science, Physical Science, and Comprehensive Science 1, 2, and 3 for the middle school grades, and Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, and Physical Science for the high school grades. Through this process, an ancillary print resource was also approved for classroom use to support school systems taking a blended print/digital approach to science instruction.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks support a comprehensive curriculum, are aligned to rigorous standards such as the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, and are updated regularly at no cost. The Techbook series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. In addition, the Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips.

Discovery Education’s Science Techbook series empowers educators to transform science instruction. Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Additional student features include bilingual text-to-speech and leveled reading tools and note-taking and highlighting capabilities.

The Science Techbooks series also includes valuable STEM resources as well. STEM Project Starters encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. In addition, the STEM In Action resources help students connect their work to STEM careers, which promotes a clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.” Embedded formative assessment opportunities that help educators monitor student progress are embedded into each Techbook, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbooks work on any device.

“Discovery Education is grateful to the Florida educators and state administrators for their thoughtful evaluation and review of Discovery Education’s Science Techbook as part of this adoption process,” said Dr. Jason Sinquefield, Director of Education Partnerships at Discovery Education. “Through its innovative design, compelling high-quality content, and its unequalled ability to engage students in learning, the Science Techbook is already inspiring the next generation of great American scientists in classrooms nationwide, and I look forward to working with school systems across Florida to bring this great tool to classrooms statewide.”
