Best Math Board Games For Kids

Best Overall Board Game: Rummikub

Rummikub

Rummikub is one of the most played board games globally. The board game engages players in a wide age range, and players with varying skill levels may have fun together. It is one of those games kids continue to play as adults.

Combining elements from Rummy, Mahjong tiles, Dominoes, and Chess games, the board game rules are surprisingly uncomplicated. The objective is to play all the tiles by placing numbered tiles in runs or groups. Although the game is fast-paced, players may adapt the game to accommodate the novice and younger kids in the family without compromising the game fun.

Rummikub reinforces STEM skills, improves math abilities, develops strategic thinking skills, and teaches players to play within time constraints. Number sequencing, pattern recognition, counting, color matching, and memorization are skills kids learn and improve when playing Rummikub.

The 106 tiles include jokers and two sets of the numbers 1-13 in four different colors. Players place their tiles on a tile rack. Tilesets played must contain three tiles in a run or a group. A run must be the same color, and the tiles must have consecutive values, and in a group, the tile has the same value but must be in different colors. When the player has placed their initial meld that totals 30, they can add to other players’ runs and groups.

The math board game is more challenging than what you may expect. The tiles are sturdy and a comfortable size for small kid’s hands, teenagers, and adults. Focusing on planning, strategizing, and problem-solving, kids will not even realize the game is a math activity that strengthens math skills.

  1. O’no 99 is a GREAT game!! You play with the cards (numbered 2-10, plus reverse, double play, hold, – 10, and the dreaded “99” cards) and its a quick game where you add up your number to the pile on the table, staying under 99. I think it’s not made anymore (which is a shame since we love it and play it regularly) but you can find it on eBay, or adapt a playing card deck (jokers = the 99 cards, and J-A = the special action cards)
