The vision of Alberto Meléndez Torres High School is to develop the technological skills necessary for the 21st century, for students, teachers, and the community in general. This also includes achieving and transforming educational excellence, access, and equal opportunities by developing knowledge, educational experiences, and strengthening the knowledge of digital citizens.
This school year has been one of the greatest challenges for our education system, teachers, students, and the wider community. The integrated technology vision was developed according to the needs that have emerged during the process of the 2020-2021 school year. The vision, mission, and goals of the Puerto Rico Department of Education’s Technology and Curriculum Unit were also taken into consideration while developing this vision.
After meeting with the principal, I formalized the integrated technology vision to include a 21st century educational institution, transforming student education into creative and meaningful learning, and promoting the participation of parents and the training of educational leaders. When you talk about technology integration, it’s not just in the classroom with the students, but rather technological empowerment for teachers, students, and the wider academic community.
To begin the process of drafting and formalizing the integrated technology vision, I considered ideas around an integrated and global technology vision that focuses on students, teachers, and the community in general, where they are empowered, educated, and trained in technological skills for the 21st century. After determining what needed to be in the integrated vision, I presented it to the school principal. The vision was also shared with two school teachers to help me stay aligned to the vision.
It takes a group effort for the integrated vision to be accomplished. All roles play a crucial and extremely important part in achieving the purpose of the vision. The principal plays a key role, as she knows the needs and priorities of our academic community. She has the ability to determine how the vision will be implemented and established. In my role as the teacher resource, “Maestro Recurso Uso de la Computadora” or “MRUC”, I have the ability to execute the vision because I model and train teachers on technology tools, provide strategies to teachers to excel in digital resources, and am trained to advise my peers. It is crucial that MRUCs remain at the forefront of digital media updates and serve as an innovative entity in the school to achieve the vision, and with it the established plans. Teachers carry out the implementation of the vision because their direct experience in the classroom gives them mastery of their subjects and how to integrate identified digital tools. It is very important that they are involved and empowered in setting the vision to help students, teachers, and the wider community.
Teamwork and motivation during the evaluation process, and the principal’s confidence in my ability to do this work, were all essential parts of achieving a comprehensive vision of shared technology. Our vision for integrated technology is intended to create digital citizens and empower teachers with innovative technological tools that transform the teaching and learning process, make students authors of their knowledge, and obtain the necessary communication and technological tools to continue their growth as a digital citizen.
The Visionary Leadership for Technology micro-credential required collaborative work to visualize and plan change initiatives with a focus on technology. When I submitted this micro-credential, I had the opportunity to work on the development of a vision of integrated technology in the educational community. The micro-credential presented information that served as a guide and reference to establish a vision. The micro-credential criteria guides you on what you need to submit to obtain it, by using existing evidence or planning for future integration projects in the school. The work that I carried out will be useful for future innovative projects to achieve technological integration in our educational settings.

La visión de la Escuela Superior Alberto Meléndez Torres es el desarrollo de las destrezas tecnológicas necesarias para el Siglo XXI, para los estudiantes, maestros y la comunidad en general. Esto también incluye alcanzar y transformar la excelencia educativa, el acceso y la igualdad de oportunidades, desarrollando conocimientos, experiencias educativas, y fortaleciendo los conocimientos de los ciudadanos digitales.
Este año escolar ha sido uno de los mayores retos para nuestro sistema educativo, maestros, estudiantes y la comunidad en general. La tecnología integrada fue desarrollada conforme a las necesidades que han surgido durante el proceso del año escolar 2020-2021. La visión, misión y metas del Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico y Unidad de Tecnología y Currículo también fueron tomadas en consideración durante el desarrollo de esta visión. Luego de reunirme con la directora escolar, formalicé la visión de tecnología integrada para incluir: Una institución educativa del siglo XXI, transformando la educación de los estudiantes en un aprendizaje significativo, creativo y promoviendo la participación de los padres de familia y la capacitación de los líderes educativos. Cuando se habla de integración de la tecnología no es solo en la sala de clases con los estudiantes, sino más bien el empoderamiento tecnológico, para maestros, estudiantes y la comunidad escolar en general.
Para comenzar el proceso de redacción y formalización de la visión de tecnología integrada consideré ideas sobre una visión de tecnología integrada y global enfocada en los estudiantes, maestros y comunidad en general, donde sean empoderados, educados y capacitados en destrezas tecnológicas para el siglo XXI. Después de determinar cuál debía ser la visión integrada, la presenté a la directora escolar. La visión también fue compartida con dos maestras para ayudarme a mantenerla alineada con la visión.
Se necesita un esfuerzo grupal para lograr la visión integrada. Todos los roles juegan un papel crucial y extremadamente importante para lograr el propósito de la visión. La directora juega un papel fundamental, ya que conoce las necesidades que tiene su comunidad escolar. Ella tiene la capacidad de determinar cómo la visión será establecida. En mi rol como maestra recurso “MRUC” tengo la habilidad de ejecutar esa visión porque modelo y capacito a maestros sobre herramientas tecnológicas, proveo estrategias a maestros para que dominen los recursos digitales y estoy capacitada para proveer asesoría a mis colegas. Es crucial que se mantenga a la vanguardia de los medios digitales actualizados y como un ente innovador en la escuela, para que logre cumplir la visión y junto con ella los planes establecidos. Los maestros llevan a cabo la implementación de la visión porque su experiencia directa en la sala de clases les brinda dominio de sus materias y conocimiento sobre cómo integrar herramientas digitales identificadas. Es muy importante que ellos estén involucrados y empoderados en el establecimiento de la visión para los estudiantes, maestros y comunidad en general.
El trabajo en equipo, la motivación en el proceso de evaluación y la confianza de la directora en mi habilidad de realizar este trabajo fueron partes esenciales de que se haya logrado una visión integral de la tecnología compartida. Nuestra visión de tecnología integrada pretende crear ciudadanos digitales y empoderar a los maestros con herramientas tecnológicas innovadoras que transformen el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje, lograr que los estudiantes sean autores de su conocimiento y obtengan las herramientas tecnológicas para continuar su crecimiento como ciudadanos digitales.
La micro credencial de Liderazgo Visionario para el Uso de la Tecnología requiere trabajo colaborativo para visualizar y planificar iniciativas de cambio con enfoque en la tecnología. Cuando envié la micro credencial tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en el desarrollo de una visión de la tecnología integrada en la comunidad educativa. La micro credencial presentó información que sirvió como guía y referencia para establecer una visión. Los requerimientos de la micro credencial te guían en lo que se necesita para obtenerla usando evidencia existente o planeando futuros proyectos de integración en la escuela. El trabajo realizado será de gran utilidad para futuros proyectos innovadores para lograr la integración tecnológica en los escenarios educativos.
