The Top Ten Reasons I Am Excited About The Personalized Learning Summit

It’s May in San Francisco - the fog is rolling in and the raincoats are back in the closet - and that means it’s time for our annual Personalized Learning Summit. Here at Education Elements, we’re working hard to make the Personalized Learning Summit a personalized experience for every single person who attends. If you’re joining us for the Summit this year, we think you’ll have an amazing experience. There will be enlightening keynote talks. More than 20 interactive and engaging workshops will let district leaders learn from and with their peers. Then there’s the party. And the list goes on.

I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the planning work for the Summit and have seen some of the incredible things we’re planning.  And along the way I’ve been compiling my list of the top ten reasons I am excited about attending the Personalized Learning Summit:

  1. 10. The party: As much fun as it is to learn from  workshops and keynotes, it’s also great to let loose and have some fun. I’m looking forward to some casual conversation, some good food, and some fun games and great prizes!  True to the Education Elements style there will, of course, be a photo booth too.
  1. 9. San Francisco: I love living here, but there’s also a good reason it’s one of the world’s top tourist destinations - it’s a great place to visit. There are lots of fun things to do here. Some ideas are in your conference app, or ask any of us locals. I love sharing the fun and excitement of this city.  I hope you’re arriving early or staying late and will have time to check it out.
  1. 8. The surprise performance: You already know there’s a party. But our clients have far more talent that even we imagined. I’ll give you a hint - if Jillian’s had let us we would have had a fog machine.
  1. 7. Tech company tours: We will get to go on tours of some of the hottest and coolest technology companies the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. While the technology is impressive, I’m looking forward to seeing first-hand the kinds of jobs and workplaces for which we are all working to prepare students.
  1. 6. Dananjaya Hettiarachchi’s keynote: I always get inspired by a great motivational speaker, and he’ll be talking about leading change, which is so critical to personalized learning - or pretty much and other kind of - success. Plus my friends who also compete in public speaking tell me he really deserved that world championship.
  1. 5. Mini documentaries: There will be real-life stories from districts which have been on their personalized learning journey for some time now. These mini documentaries will be presented throughout the Personalized Learning Summit by leaders from a few districts, and we’ll learn about the issues they faced and how they overcame them.
  1. 4. A student’s story: WeI’ll get to hear directly from a student. I know we all do this work to improve the lives of students, but it’s a special privilege to hear directly from a student how personalized learning changed his life. We talk a lot about student voice and I am so glad one will share his voice with us at the Summit.
  1. 3. Anthony Kim: He wrote the book on personalized learning (literally) and has been on the leading edge of the field for many years. I am looking forward to hearing his inspiring talk about what he sees coming in personalized learning.
  1. 2. Workshops: All of the Summit attendees are innovative leaders in personalized learning. A few will be leading workshops on a wide range of topics that will bring new ideas as well as spark a thrilling exchange of ideas among all of you amazing leaders.  Plus I have heard more than one of them includes a soundtrack, videos or costumes.

And the number one reason I am excited about the Personalized Learning Summit is...drum roll please…

  1. 1. You! Each and every one of the amazing people I will get to meet, learn from and exchange ideas with. I know I will leave the Summit full of new ideas and with a new set of the best colleagues I can imagine.

I hope I’ll get to meet you in person at the Summit. But if you can’t make it this year, follow along on Twitter by following @edelements and chime in using #plsummit - I am looking forward to hearing from you!
